Earth rotation: night and day

Take a trip into space and look back at the Earth. Turn the Earth to find out how the Earth's rotation is related to night and day.

Structure and features

Students will see through an animation and see when the sun shines on one side of the Earth, the other side is in darkness. Students answer a series of questions by experimenting with the model.

The website contains:

  • an overview
  • for teachers information
  • a video animation
  • a series of questions for students to answer while viewing the animation.

Teacher notes

This interactive animation provides opportunities for students to use an online model to consolidate their understanding of Earth, space sciences, and night and day. There are direct links to the Australian Curriculum year 3 'Earth's rotation on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day' and year 5 'the Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the sun)'.

Possibilities for learning include using the 10 questions as a formative assessment to check in on developing student understanding.
