Genetics teaching box

The genetics teaching box found on the Exploratorium website has a series of suggested lessons with links to activities and worksheets.

The science concepts covered are Mendelian genetics, molecular genetics and genes and the environment.

Structure and features

This resource aligns to the Australian Curriculum science year 10 genetics concepts in the biological science strand.

This resource contains teaching resources on genetics variation and how traits are inherited.

Teacher notes

  • Science understanding strand
  • Biological science
  • Year 10
  • Genetics.

There are a series of lessons and worksheets that could help you plan to teach.

  • Genetics and the role of genes, chromosomes and DNA (as the blueprint for controlling the characteristics of organisms), as a mechanism for passing on these adaptations of form and function from one generation to the next.
  • Genetic information passed on to offspring through sexual reproduction is from both parents by meiosis and fertilisation.
  • Predict ratios of offspring genotypes and phenotypes in crosses involving dominant or recessive alleles or in genes that are sex-linked.
  • Multigenerational inheritance using pedigree diagrams to show patterns of inheritance of a simple dominant or recessive characteristic through generations of a family.
