States of matter

An interactive item on the particle theory of solids, liquids and gases.

Structure and features

Using this interactive item, students identify the states of matter based on differences in their particle arrangements.

Students answer a sequence of questions, by selecting the appropriate particle model and then choosing a statement describing the reason for their choice.

Student can record their knowledge of matter before and after completion of the interactive item.

Teacher notes

  • Science understanding strand
  • Chemical science
  • Year 8
  • States of matter unit.

This interactive items enables students to:

  • identify types of matter based on differences in their particle arrangements
  • use the arrangement of the particles of a substance to classify it as solid, liquid or gas
  • relate the arrangement of the particles of a solid, liquid or gas to their particular properties.

Students can print out their report for you to assess their understanding.
