What is a computer?

Have you ever wondered how a laptop, or a smart phone or a tablet works? Understanding the devices we use every day and how they work is important. Even very young children can explore how devices work.

In this resource, students will work through the activities listed to develop their skills and understanding of digital systems.

Structure and features

Ever wondered what is actually going on inside a computer? Let’s find out! Ask your students to:

  1. draw what they think is inside a computer on paper or using the draw a computer (PDF 919KB) exercise.
  2. watch the inside a computer video
  3. add some new pictures, words or labels to their original drawing now that they have watched the video and heard some new words
  4. draw or write a list of hardware and software that they know
  5. build their own cardboard computer, using their own pictures, or using the make a computer exercise
  6. reflect – if they could turn anything into a computer (PDF 58KB) what would it be and what would it do? Record their ideas.
