Which Sprite will win?

Can 5 year olds code? Yep, they sure can! Scratch Jr is a free app that can be used on a tablet or desktop computer. This resource guides students through making an animation using very simple programming blocks.

Structure and features

How do apps work? How do we get things moving on the screen?

Scratch Jr allows even very young children to code.

In this resource students will look at creating a simple animation using Scratch Jr.

Students will code three different animal sprites using the speed block.

They can adjust the blocks to decide who will win the race.

Teacher notes

This resource aligns to the Digital Technologies subject in the Australian Curriculum.

The sub-strand is 'investigating and defining' in the 'creating digital solutions' section.

Scratch Jr is a free app for students on any platform. To be able to view animations you need to share directly from the app. To record as an animation, a screen casting app is recommended.
